Why Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment if I Have Straight Teeth?

Posted .

We frequently encounter patients who believe they do not need orthodontic treatment because their teeth are decently aligned. Understandably, these patients are often surprised or confused when their dentist or orthodontist recommends treatment. Here are several reasons you may benefit from orthodontic treatment even with straight teeth:
  1. Misaligned bite: Orthodontic treatment isn’t solely focused on straightening teeth but also corrects issues related to the way your upper and lower jaws and teeth fit together. Even if your teeth appear straight, you may have an improper bite, such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite. These bite relationships can cause difficulties with chewing and speaking, and can lead to excessive dental wear. Bite anomalies can also trigger TMJ issues.

  2. Mild crowding or spacing issues: Sometimes, the teeth we show during a smile appear straight but other teeth have spacing or crowding problems. Even mildly crowded teeth can lead to difficulties with oral hygiene and uneven dental wear. Spacing issues can affect your smile’s aesthetics and lead to food impaction and gum irritation.

  3. Jaw alignment: Orthodontic treatment is not solely concerned with teeth alignment but also addresses jaw discrepancies. If your upper and lower jaws do not align correctly, you may experience issues such as an uneven bite or jaw pain. If jaw alignment is not properly treated or is significantly off, facial surgery may be recommended (in addition to orthodontics) to correct.

  4. Dental health: Even if your teeth are currently straight, certain factors, such as oral habits, new dental restorations, tooth wear and wisdom teeth eruption could cause changes in tooth alignment. Orthodontic treatment may be recommended before you have a dental implant, bridge or veneers placed in order to enhance the strength and longevity of these dental restorations.
